Pressure-Temperature Ratings — Class 150 to 2500

ASME B16.5 defines seven pressure classes — each class defining the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) of a flange at a given temperature. For copper alloy flanges in Group 3.1 (C12200, C46400) the approximate Class 150 MAWP at ambient temperature is 20.0 bar (290 psi). For Class 300 in the same material group: 51.1 bar (741 psi).

De-rating at Elevated Temperature

Copper alloy P-T ratings decrease significantly with temperature. At 150°C, Class 150 C12200 flange MAWP drops to approximately 14.1 bar from 19.6 bar at ambient. Always consult ASME B16.5 Table 2-1.1 for the exact P-T rating at your service temperature — never use ambient temperature ratings for elevated temperature service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ASME B16.22 and BS EN 1254-1 fittings interchangeable?

Not directly. While both cover solder-joint (capillary) copper fittings, their dimensional systems differ. ASME B16.22 is based on ASTM B88 nominal pipe sizes (NPS) with inch-based ODs, while BS EN 1254-1 uses metric ODs per EN 1057 (Type R/Y tube). A fitting listed as NPS ¾ (22.2mm OD) is NOT the same as a 22mm OD EN 1254-1 fitting. Always specify the correct system for your tube type.

What is the difference between ASME B16.5 Class 150 and EN 1092-1 PN 16 flanges?

Despite their approximate equivalence in pressure rating at ambient temperature, ASME B16.5 Class 150 and EN 1092-1 PN 16 flanges are NOT dimensionally interchangeable. They differ in bolt circle diameter, number of bolts, bolt size, flange OD and flange thickness. A Class 150 ASME flange bolted to a PN 16 EN flange may achieve gasket seating but the bolt pattern will not align. Always use the same standard throughout a system.

What material should I specify for copper flanges in seawater service?

For seawater piping flanges: 90/10 Cupro-Nickel C70600 (forged per ASTM B283; dimensioned per ASME B16.5 Class 150 or 300) is the industry standard.
